Testimony: Purple Line Impact on Trail |
||
PURPLE LINE TESTIMONY 11-18-08 I'm here tonight on behalf of the Kensington Town Council, which voted on November 10 to support the construction of a Purple Line Route. However, the Council also unanimously agreed the alternative routes should be studied before any final decisions are made. The Town is a Tree City USA and would like to see the least invasive construction used, leaving as little negative impact as possible on the existing trees. They are also concerned that the original alignment studied was before the decisions for the Base Realignment Act were determined; and feel a route closer to the existing NIH Metro and the Naval Med Facility would be logical. The last concern would be the potential traffic issues created by the Purple Line with a direct at grade crossing, which I assume would be the same for any of the potential tracks? Kensington has the highest amount of traffic travelling along Connecticut Avenue – greater than Chevy Chase, as Jones Bridge and East West Highways become the East/West connections before one enters Chevy Chase. Thus the backups that would be created as a result of regular Purple Line crossings over Route 185, would surely intensify the already horrendous traffic jams we endure during rush hours. Thank you again for your time and hope the State carefully considers all options for the creation of a Purple Line. Peter Fosselman, Mayor Town of Kensington
